Batman was a series based on one of the most popular comic book characters of all time The series was pure camp and when it premiered it quickly became one of the most popular shows of the time and produced a nationwide fad known as Batmania. Despite the fact the series is over 25 years old and that four much darker Batman movies have since been released, the camp style of Batman the TV series is still what many people think of when they think of Batman and of comic bocks in general.

Batman. The caped crusader, and his youthful sidekick Robin. The boy wonder, were both heroes who had no super powers. They were forced to rely upon their brains, their fists and art impressive array of Bat gadgets to defeat the many colorful villains who plagued their home of Gotham City In reality Batman and Robin were really millionaire Bruce Wayne and his ward Dick Grayson. The pair lived in stately Wayne Manor along with their butler Alfred. ~Whenever tnou~1e started in Gotham City. Police Commissioner Gordon. Who was unaware of Batman’s real identity, would either call Batman on the special red Batphone r signal him with the Bat signal, a spotlight that would project the symbol of a bat on a yellow background, into the night sky. Upon learning they were needed Bruce and Dick would slide down the Bat poles, which were hidden in stately Wayne Manor emerging in the BatCave in full costume. The Bat Cave was a huge cavern beneath ~Jayne Manor which contained a wide assortment of bat computers and the Batmobile. The Batmobile was a high tech rocket powered car, which they would use to go and see what Commissioner Gordon needed.

Batman the comic book character first appeared in 1939 in issue 27 of Detective Comics, as one of several characters who appeared in the book. He soon proved popular enough to receive his own comic book. The character of Batman first arrived in Hollywood43 in a serial entitled Batman A sequel to this serial was made in 1949 entitled Batman and Robin. ABC bought the rights to the comic book character with little idea on how to proceed with a series. ABC gave me rights to William Oozier, who became Batman’s executive producer, and more or less gave him free reign in deve7oping the character for television. Dozier decided on camp. making Batman so serious that he became nags to the adult audience while providing adventure that the children cou3d enjoy. The series first aired on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The Tuesday episode would always end in a c7ifthanger in whicl2 Batman. Room, or both were about to meet their doom. These threats as well as other unexpected happenings would often garner a response by Robin at Holy this or’ Holy that. The announcer, William Dozier, v~ou1d come on and tell everyone to tune in tomorrow at the same Bat lime and same Bat Channel to see how our heroes would get out of their situation.

Batman and Robin ended up playing the straight men to their colorful rogues gallery who were the real stars of the series. Many of the villains came from the comic book and a few were original creations for the TV series. The most popular villains would reappear after their first defeat by the dynamic duo only to be vanquished again. Some of the more popular villains were: the Joker, the clown prince of crime who did anything for a laugh: the Penguin, the pompous waddling perpetrator of foul play, who always used birds in his crimes: the Riddler, who felt compelled to leave Batman and Robin ~ riddle that would reveal what his next crime would be and the Catwoman, the alluring feline fiend. The series however became so popular that many big name actors pleaded to get parts in the show many became the lead villain, however many had to settle for cameos.

The series was given what was perceived to be a comic book look. The use of camera angles arc colored lights were used to give the villains headquarters warped looks. During the numerous fist fights animated titles such as: POW! and ZAP’ would appear over the action

Batman first appeared as a mid-season replacement series in January of 1966. It was an immediate success with Batmania sweeping the country. This huge success prompted the release of a feature film based on the TV series curing the summer of 1966. The feature films bigger budget allowed for several expensive props such as the Batboat and the Bateopter to be built when the TV series’ budget simply could not afford to create. These props were subsequently used in second and third season episodes. giving the series a more expensive look. As quickly as Batmania swept across tbe country it began to die down. By the end of the second season the ratings had fallen and something needed to be done to bring them back up. When the series returned for its third and final season it was now on only once a week. with episodes often self contained half hair stories. The character of Batgirl was added in an effort to boost the ratings. Batgirl was secretly Barbara Gordon. Commissioner Gordon’s daughter. She was a female version of Batman who would assist the dynamic duo, although they had no idea whom she really was. The addition of Batgirl was not enough and ABC canceled the series at the end of the season. NBC agreed to pick the series up tar a fourth season, on the condition that the sets were still available. They were not.

Adam West’s portrayal of Batman and his acting abilities were harshly criticized while Batman was on the air. In West’s defense. It should be noted that the choice of doing Batman as camp was not his. ~Jest was hired to portray Batman as camp and aid his jab competently. Despite the fact that he had performed in many other roles prior to Batman, Adam West found himself a victim of typecasting after the series ended. After the program was cancelled, West along with Burt Ward could frequently be found at car shows at mall openings as Batman and Robin with the Batmobile. That did not help people separate West from his most famous role. One role which he aid get and which his real life experiences may have helped prepare him for was in an unaired episode at the shot lived 1987 series Once a Hero. In the episode Things Get Ugly. West portrays a TV actor who finds himself typecast from playing a comic book character on TV. Holy Typecasting!

NOTE:            (Window) refers to a cameo appearance of an actor / character in a window of a building that Batman and Robin are scaling.
