Logan’s Run was a series based upon the William F. Nolan novel, which also served as the basis for the 1976 feature film of the same name.

Logan’s Run was set in the 23rd century, some 200 years after a nuclear holocaust has destroyed civilization as we know it. Mankind now lives in many small societies, each developing in divergent ways from others; many in fact unaware that other societies even exist. One of these societies is the City of Domes. The City of Domes was a hedonistic, technologically advanced society where no one was lacking physical comforts. One small problem with the society was that no one lived beyond the age of 30. When a person reached their 30th birthday they participated in a ritual known as Carousel, where they were renewed and came back as an infant. A small number of people however find out that Carousel was simply ritual suicide and attempt to run from it to a mythical place known as Sanctuary when their 30th birthday approached. To combat this problem. the Sandmen were created. The Sandmen were an elite police force whose purpose was to track down and kill runners. Runners were people who attempted to leave the city instead of partaking in carousel.

In the series, Logan was a Sandman who found he had doubts about the essenstial truths of the system that existed in the City of Domes. Faced with killing or aiding Jessica he found himself convinced by Jessica that the runners were right and the Sandmen were in the wrong. He became a runner and fled the City of. Domes with Jessica to find Sanctuary. Realizing how bad it looked to have a Sandman become a runner, the City elders, all of whom were over 30. summoned Francis, Logan’s former best friend and partner, and gave him the mission to leave the city and bring back both Logan and Jessica. If he successfully completed the mission he would be made one of the city elders and be allowed to live past the age of 30.

The chase was thus on with Logan’s Run became another, this time futuristic version, of The Fugitive. In each episode Logan. Jessica and Rem, an android they befriend in the pilot, would  encounter a new society and get embroiled with problems there. By the time the problems were solved they would have to leave in order to avoid capture by a pursuing Francis or to keep up their search for Sanctuary.

D.C. Fontana of Star Trek fame was the story editor, and the series is in some ways similar to what GENESIS II  would have been had it ever made it beyond the pilots stage.
