Werewolf was one of the first Sunday night programs on the FOX network when FOX started broadcasting in 1987. Werewolf reworked the legend of the werewolf, making him the program’s protagonist. College student Eric Cord was the werewolf. As the series opens, his roommate informs Eric that he has become a werewolf and asks Eric to kill him with a silver bullet when he transforms into the beast. Eric, to say the least, is a bit skeptical, and is unable to prevent his roommate from attacking him before he is able to kill him. Eric thus finds himself with a pair of big problems: he is wanted by the law for killing his roommate and he has become a werewolf himself.

Unlike the legendary werewolf who only turned into a werewolf during the time of the full moon, Eric’s transformations could come at any time. His only warning of an impending transformation being the appearance of a red pentagram on his hand. Eric also learns that his condition is not permanent, if he can locate and kill the ‘source of the werewolf bloodline’ he will have the curse lifted from him. The source appears to be Janos Skorzeny, a crusty 1600-year-old sea captain. In the tradition of The Incredible Hulk, Eric manages to wander the country searching for Skorzeny and in the process meets up with people whom he ends up helping. The werewolf however is a bit more violent than the Hulk but he seldom ends up killing the bad guys during his transformations. While on his quest to find Skorzeny, Eric must keep one step ahead of Alamo Joe. Alamo Joe was an Indian bounty hunter determined to collect the bounty on Eric since he is still wanted for killing his roommate. Alamo Joe quickly figures out that Eric is not his normal quarry and begins carrying silver bullets with him.

Eric gets a bit of surprise when he finally catches up with Skorzeny and Skorzeny is killed. Eric is not cured and soon discovers that Skorzeny was not the source of the werewolf bloodline. Instead he learns that Nicholas Remy, a successful yuppie type, is the true source of the werewolf bloodline and it is he who must be killed. The series was canceled shortly after this revelation, with Eric remaining cursed until the end.

FOX went all out in promoting the series with an 800 number one could call to keep abreast of werewolf sightings. On many episodes they also placed a disclaimer stating that the program may be too intense for younger viewers,

Trivia note: Werewolf producer Frank Lupo took the name Janos Skorseny from the name of the vampire in the original pilot movie to Kolchak the Night Stalker.

A young boy, fascinated with monsters and whose mother is having problems with her boyfriend. nurses Eric back to health after he is shot by Alamo Joe.

005. Spectre of the Wolf

A college professor, who is an expert on werewolves and written several books on the subject, thinks that Eric is a bit crazy when Eric comes to him for help.

Eric takes a job at a hunting lodge and ends up caught in the middle of a deadly feud.

A witch who is trying to help Eric is interrupted in her efforts by a man who blames the death of his son on one of her potions.

Eric’s job at a small town cafe is threatened by the arrival of Alamo Joe and a biker gang that is out to have some fun.

Eric arrives in a small town where a hunter has recently been killed, apparently by Bigfoot.

Eric’s search for Skorzeny leads him to a monastery where he believes Skorzeny responsible for several bizarre killings which occurred there.

Alamo Joe finally catches up with Eric in a small town jail, however a confrontation leaves Alamo Joe in the hospital and Eric apparently dead in the hospital morgue.

Eric is blamed for the brutal slayings of several prostitutes whom Skorzeny has killed.

On Halloween, Eric meets a disfigured man who hides himself in an old allegedly ‘haunted’ house were Eric has taken up temporary residence.

Taking a job with the railroad. Eric befriends a former prize fighter who is on the run from the mob, however involvement by the pair in a barroom brawl draws the mob’s attention to the man.

Eric confronts an ancient she-wolf bent on revenge when his travels take him to a run down hotel.

A rancher comes after Eric when he befriends a she-wolf who earlier had attacked the rancher.

018. Blood Ties

Members of a quarrelling family try to pin the blame for a relative’s death on Eric.

Eric is kidnapped by a critically ill Southern political boss. who wants Eric to save his life and make him inmortal by turning him into a werewolf.

Eric is stranded by a snowstorm with six other people who are being killed off one by one.

Alamo Joe helps Eric seek revenge on a psycho disguised as a cop who tried to bury Eric alive and killed several other youths in a similar fashion.

An old Indian medicine man tells Eric of a way to get rid of the werewolf’s curse, however several deaths in his tribe caused by the mythical skinwalker may prevent Eric from being cured.

Skorzeny has apparently been killing a band of hobos who Eric meets when he jumps a train.

Eric catches up with Skorzeny, when he discovers a werewolf killing teenage runaways whom are living in an abandoned building.

Eric discovers that Skorzeny’s death will not cure him of the curse, when he meets Nicholas Remy. the ancient head of the werewolf line- the one who must die to cure Eric.

Eric comes to the aid of a blind woman he meets while working at an amusement park when he learns that her fiancé plans on killing her.

Eric teams up with another werewolf in an effort to defeat Nicholas and put an end to both their curses.

An elderly woman who reports having seen Eric in his werewolf form is not taken seriously by the police since she had earlier reported seeing a flying saucer from Venus.
